Supreme Court Rules on Landmark Gun Decision

Last Thursday, the Supreme Court reaffirmed an individual’s 2nd Amendment right to keep and bear arms. The ruling is brought upon by the controversy of a Washington D.C. gun ban that was challenged.

In all honesty, I’ve had a more cynical view of where our Supreme Court rulings were going on the issue of gun rights. Fortunately the right decision was made, and an individual’s right to own a gun is now secured. The National Rifle Association has filed lawsuits in San Francisco and Chicago to get their strict gun control laws removed. Both cities plan to fight this lawsuit but, with the recent Washington D.C. ruling, things are looking as if they will fall in favor of the NRA on this issue. The Supreme Court ruled with another 5-4 vote. The ruling did primarily two things regarding the gun laws in Washington D.C. – it struck down the law that said guns must be disabled if not in a business and it struck down the ban of handguns in one’s own home. Many related laws and regulations where not clarified by the Court, so it’s possible they may be brought up in the potential Chicago and San Francisco cases.

The right to own a gun is a right guaranteed to us in the 2nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. It was victory for liberty that the Supreme Court ruled in favor of individual rights.

For those of us in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Washington D.C., I fear it will still be some time before we see proper concealed carry gun laws.
